An exclusive email interview with Pixel Tribe, the creators of the upcoming Kakao Games title, Goddess Order, reveals insights into their pixel RPG development process. We spoke with Ilsun (Art Director) and Terron J. (Contents Director).

Pixel Tribe: A Deep Dive into Goddess Order Development

Droid Gamers: What inspires your pixel sprites?

Ilsun: As Art Director, I lead the Goddess Order graphics team, building on the pixel art success of Crusaders Quest. Our high-quality pixel art aims for a console-level feel, emphasizing narrative. Each character and background is painstakingly pixel-crafted. Inspiration draws from countless games and stories; pixel art is about subtly conveying form and movement through tiny units. It's less about specific references and more about a wellspring of accumulated experience. Collaboration with my team – Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan's creation involved much discussion and shared passion – significantly shaped the style. Ongoing dialogue with scenario writers and combat designers further refines character design. For instance, a description like "a refined noblewoman who becomes a fierce dual-blade warrior" sparks collaborative sketching and refinement.

Droid Gamers: How do you approach world-building in a fantasy RPG?

Terron J.: World-building starts with our pixel art characters. Lisbeth, Violet, and Yan's initial designs defined the game's core. Their inherent personalities, roles, and purposes guided the narrative. Developing their stories felt less like work and more like an immersive journey, revealing their growth and heroic missions. The game's emphasis on manual controls stems from the characters' strength and the scenario's development.

Droid Gamers: How do you design combat styles and animations?

Terron J.: Goddess Order's combat features three characters taking turns, using linked skills for synergy. Design involves extensive brainstorming and discussions. We first define each character's role (e.g., powerful attacker, support healer) and battle formation. We ensure each character offers unique advantages and that controls are intuitive. Linked skill timing significantly impacts battle outcomes.

Ilsun: Visually, we enhance combat with art elements – weapon choice, appearance, and movements to reflect personality. While 2D pixel art is used, characters move three-dimensionally, creating a unique visual style. Our studio uses real weapons to study movement for realistic animation.

Terron J.: Finally, technical optimization is crucial for smooth mobile gameplay, ensuring consistent performance even on lower-spec devices without compromising cutscenes or immersion.

Droid Gamers: What's next for Goddess Order?

Ilsun: Goddess Order offers a JRPG-style narrative following the Lisbeth Knights' quest to save the world. The unique graphics and combat system enhance immersion. Individual knight origin stories will enrich the world's lore. Post-launch, we plan to add activities like quests and treasure hunts, expanding both chapter and origin stories, and introducing advanced content with refined controls.
