Switch 2 Predicted as the Best Selling Next-Gen Console Despite Not Even Being Out Yet
Despite not yet being released, DFC Intelligence projects the Nintendo Switch 2 to dominate next-gen console sales. Their 2024 Video Game Market Report forecasts sales exceeding 15-17 million units in 2025, and over 80 million by 2028. This makes the Switch 2 the "clear winner," surpassing competitors Microsoft and Sony.
This projection stems from the Switch 2's anticipated earlier release (rumored for 2025) and limited initial competition. DFC Intelligence anticipates a significant manufacturing challenge for Nintendo to meet the predicted demand.
While Sony and Microsoft are reportedly developing handheld consoles, these remain in early stages. DFC Intelligence suggests only one of these post-Switch 2 consoles (expected around 2028) will achieve significant success, potentially a hypothetical "PS6," leveraging PlayStation's established fanbase and strong IPs. The three-year head start for the Switch 2 provides a considerable advantage.
The Switch's enduring popularity is undeniable. Circana data reveals the Switch has surpassed the PlayStation 2's lifetime US sales, becoming the second best-selling console in US history, behind only the Nintendo DS. This achievement is noteworthy, even considering a reported 3% decline in Switch yearly sales.
DFC Intelligence's report paints a positive outlook for the video game industry. After a two-year slump, growth is projected to resume, with 2025 anticipated as a particularly strong year. This resurgence is attributed to new product releases, including the Switch 2 and Grand Theft Auto VI, which are expected to boost consumer spending. The gaming audience is also expected to expand, exceeding 4 billion players by 2027. The rise of "high-end gaming-on-the-go" and the growth of esports and gaming influencers contribute to this positive forecast, driving increased hardware purchases across PC and consoles.
