Sony Issues DMCA to Bloodborne 60fps Patch Creator: Timing Questioned

The creator of the high-profile Bloodborne 60fps patch, Lance McDonald, has announced that he received a DMCA takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment. In a tweet, McDonald shared that he was asked to remove all links to the patch he had posted online, and he complied with the request.

McDonald, known for his work in the gaming community, also mentioned a humorous encounter with former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida. During a meeting, McDonald told Yoshida about his mods for PlayStation games, specifically mentioning the 60fps mod for Bloodborne, to which Yoshida reacted with laughter.

Bloodborne, developed by FromSoftware and released on the PS4, has been a topic of much discussion among fans due to Sony's lack of updates or enhancements for the game. Despite its success and the demand for a 60fps patch, remaster, or sequel, Sony has not revisited the title. This has led community members like McDonald to fill the void with unofficial modifications.

Recently, advancements in PS4 emulation have allowed fans to experience Bloodborne at 60fps on PC, as demonstrated by tech experts at Digital Foundry. This development, using the ShadPS4 emulator, might have prompted Sony's aggressive response, though IGN has sought comment from Sony to clarify the situation.

In a recent interview with Kinda Funny Games, Shuhei Yoshida shared his personal theory on why Bloodborne has not seen further development. Yoshida, no longer involved with first-party titles, suggested that FromSoftware's director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, might be too busy to work on a Bloodborne project himself and is protective of the game, not wanting others to handle it. Yoshida believes that Sony respects Miyazaki's stance on this matter.

Despite the game's dormancy nearly a decade after its release, there is a glimmer of hope. In previous interviews, Miyazaki has acknowledged that Bloodborne could benefit from being updated for more modern hardware, although he often deflects direct questions about the game's future, citing that FromSoftware does not own the IP.
