Star Wars Outlaws Draws Inspiration from Samurai Media, Just Like the Films
Star Wars Outlaws: A Galactic Adventure Inspired by Samurai and Open Worlds
Star Wars Outlaws' creative director, Julian Gerighty, recently revealed the surprising influences behind the game's development: Ghost of Tsushima and Assassin's Creed Odyssey. This blend of inspirations promises a unique open-world adventure within the Star Wars universe.
The Ghost of Tsushima Influence:
Gerighty cites Ghost of Tsushima's immersive world design as a major inspiration. He admired its cohesive narrative, where story, world, and gameplay seamlessly intertwine, avoiding repetitive tasks. This focus on immersion is central to Outlaws, aiming to place players directly into the role of a Star Wars outlaw, experiencing the thrill of a galactic adventure firsthand. The parallel drawn between the samurai's journey and the outlaw's path highlights the game's commitment to a captivating and unified narrative experience.
The Assassin's Creed Odyssey Influence:
Assassin's Creed Odyssey's expansive world and RPG elements also played a significant role. Gerighty valued Odyssey's freedom of exploration and the sheer scale of its world. This translated into Outlaws' design, aiming for a similarly vast and engaging environment. Collaboration with the Odyssey team provided invaluable insights into managing world size and traversal distances, ensuring a balanced and enjoyable experience. However, unlike Odyssey's extensive playtime, Outlaws prioritizes a more focused, narrative-driven adventure of manageable length.
Embracing the Outlaw Fantasy:
The core concept of Outlaws centers on the classic Star Wars scoundrel archetype, drawing inspiration from Han Solo. The game aims to capture the fantasy of being a rogue in a galaxy brimming with opportunities and wonder. This vision guides all aspects of the game, from playing Sabacc in a cantina to piloting a ship through space, ensuring a cohesive and immersive experience of living the outlaw life within the Star Wars universe. The seamless transitions between various activities further enhance this feeling of freedom and adventure.
