Smash Bros Named for Friendly Beef-Squashing
25 years after its debut, the origin story behind the name "Super Smash Bros." is finally revealed by its creator, Masahiro Sakurai. This isn't a tale of familial ties, but rather one of friendly rivalry.
Sakurai's YouTube series unveils the truth: the name reflects the game's core concept – friends resolving minor conflicts through playful combat. The late Satoru Iwata, former Nintendo president, played a key role in solidifying the title.
Sakurai recounts a brainstorming session where various names were proposed. Iwata's crucial contribution? The "Bros." He cleverly reasoned that the term suggested a friendly squabble rather than outright animosity, even though the characters are not literally brothers. This decision, along with input from Shigesato Itoi (creator of the Mother/Earthbound series), cemented the now-iconic name.
The video also offers a heartwarming glimpse into Sakurai's relationship with Iwata, including Iwata's direct involvement in programming the original Super Smash Bros. prototype, then known as Dragon King: The Fighting Game. This narrative adds a touching personal element to the already compelling origin story of this beloved fighting game franchise.
