Genshin Devs' Struggle Amidst Negative Fan Feedback
A Commitment to Improvement and Listening to Players
(c) SentientBamboo Liu Wei described the "anxiety and confusion" within the Genshin Impact team due to intense criticism, particularly following the Lunar New Year 2024 updates. In a speech (translated by SentientBamboo on YouTube), he revealed the team felt "useless" in the face of overwhelmingly negative feedback. This follows a series of controversies surrounding updates, including the 4.4 Lantern Rite event's underwhelming rewards (three intertwined fates) and the perceived disparity in updates compared to Honkai: Star Rail. Comparisons to Kuro Games' Wuthering Waves, regarding gameplay and character movement, also fueled discontent. The 4.5 Chronicled Banner's gacha mechanics and concerns about cultural representation in character design further intensified the backlash.
While visibly emotional, Wei acknowledged player concerns, emphasizing that the team, comprised of gamers themselves, was overwhelmed by the volume of criticism. He stressed the need to filter and understand the genuine feedback from the player community ("Travelers").
Despite the setbacks, Wei expressed optimism and reaffirmed the team's dedication to improvement and active listening. He acknowledged that meeting every expectation is impossible but expressed gratitude for the continued support of players.
In other news, a preview for the upcoming Natlan region was recently released, with its launch scheduled for August 28th.
