The ninth anniversary of Fate/Grand Order was marred by controversy following a significant update. The introduction of powerful new skills, requiring an increased number of "servant coins" to unlock, ignited a furious backlash from players. Previously, maxing a five-star character needed six copies; the update raised this to eight, or nine to avoid an extensive grind. This angered players, particularly those who had already invested heavily in the game, feeling the update negated the positive impact of a newly introduced pity system.

The response was immediate and intense. The game's official Twitter account was flooded with angry messages, some containing graphic death threats directed at the developers. In response to the severe backlash, Yoshiki Kano, FGO Part 2's development director, issued a public apology. He acknowledged player dissatisfaction and anxiety surrounding the new append skills, outlining several corrective measures. These included the ability to switch between unlocked append skills while retaining the original skill level, and the promise to restore servant coins spent on Holy Grail summoning and provide compensation. The developer's response, including 40 free pulls for all players, is seen by many as a temporary fix rather than a long-term solution. The eight-duplicate requirement for maximizing five-star servants remains a significant hurdle for completionists. The community questions the developers' commitment to previous promises of increased servant coin accessibility.

The Fate/Grand Order anniversary debacle highlights the precarious balance game developers must strike between monetization and player satisfaction. While the immediate outrage may lessen with the offered compensation, the incident has undeniably damaged the trust between developers and players. Rebuilding this trust requires open communication and genuine engagement with player concerns. The community's enthusiasm is vital to the game's continued success.
