Ex-Sony Director Slams Until Dawn Credit Snub

A former PlayStation narrative lead is urging the creators of the Until Dawn film adaptation to properly credit the original game writers in the movie's acknowledgments.

As reported by Eurogamer, Kim MacAskill's Change.org petition challenges Sony to "establish new standards for intellectual property attribution, especially for cross-media adaptations" by updating the Until Dawn film credits to reflect the game developers' contributions.

"After departing from Until Dawn, I noticed the film credits list directors and screenwriters but completely omit the game development team who crafted this iconic franchise," MacAskill stated. "Their years of creative labor deserve public recognition beyond a generic 'based on the Sony game' line. No credits. No appreciation. No respect for their legacy."

In a detailed LinkedIn post, MacAskill contrasted Sony's approach with HBO's The Last of Us adaptation, which credits both Naughty Dog and creative lead Neil Druckmann. She revealed confronting Sony executives about intellectual property rights: "I was explicitly told that as a salaried employee, I would never receive credit for IP I helped create - no royalties, no control, no recognition whatsoever."

The creative director described how Sony representatives dismissed her concerns about ownership rights: "They claimed this wasn't personal - just standard corporate policy across all divisions." She clarified her position: "I'm not seeking full ownership - just proper accreditation and minimal adaptation rights for my creative contributions."

Her petition makes a broader appeal: "Sony must reform how it attributes creative work in cross-media projects. Even an executive producer credit would validate the original creators whose visions shaped these transformative entertainment properties."

"This fight isn't just about Until Dawn - it's about protecting creative integrity across our industry," MacAskill continued. "Proper recognition ensures future generations of developers can work knowing their contributions won't be erased when adaptations happen."

The petition emerges alongside rumors of Until Dawn Remastered joining May 2025's PlayStation Plus lineup - potentially timed with the film's recent theatrical release. IGN's review team was underwhelmed by the adaptation, scoring it 5/10 and criticizing its failure to capture the game's horror essence, calling it "a shallow imitation that squanders its source material's potential."
