MultiVersus Fans Hail Final Season 5 Update as #SaveMultiVersus Trends

Author : Sadie Oct 25,2025

MultiVersus is scheduled to shut down when Season 5 concludes in May, but a recent update that significantly boosted combat speed has players enjoying the gameplay more than ever—even sparking a #SaveMultiVersus trend across social media.

The Warner Bros. platform fighter community eagerly logged in on February 4 at 9 AM PT to experience the launch of its fifth and final season. Last week, developer Player First Games outlined plans to discontinue the project, hinting that the update would add DC’s Aquaman and Looney Tunes’ Lola Bunny as the final playable fighters. What many expected to be a somber farewell turned into a major gameplay overhaul, with sweeping movement adjustments that dramatically accelerated the overall pace. This foundational change is something the community has requested for years, yet it arrives just as MultiVersus approaches its end.

Players first noticed the faster combat after Player First shared a Season 5 Combat Changes Preview video on X/Twitter. Veterans of the free-to-play Warner Bros. fighter can’t miss the difference—characters now chain combos more fluidly and traverse the screen quicker than in previous versions. This marks a clear departure from the floaty mechanics criticized during the 2022 MultiVersus beta, and it’s even swifter than the relaunch version from May of last year.

According to the Season 5 patch notes, the increased speed stems from reduced hitpause on “most attacks in the game.” This makes combo execution faster for every character, with several fighters receiving additional speed boosts. Morty, LeBron, Iron Giant, Bugs Bunny, Black Adam, and others feel especially agile thanks to adjustments that allow fast falling during specific aerial moves. Garnet, already a quick character, now has stronger ringout potential on the ground and slightly weaker aerial ringout capability, balancing her overall impact.

Season 5 transforms the nearly year-old fighter into an almost entirely new experience, offering more than just two fresh characters. The irony is that this is the final update—just as Player First delivers the long-requested gameplay polish, MultiVersus will shut down permanently on May 30. The closure means an end to seasonal content and its removal from digital stores, as Warner Bros. Games disables online play entirely, leaving only offline modes available.

Fans are now left bewildered and frustrated as MultiVersus finally becomes the game they always wanted, just before it disappears. X user @PJiggles_ described it as “the most interesting bad game in existence,” referencing its rocky beta, 2024 relaunch, and this sudden combat speed boost. Professional Super Smash Bros. player and streamer Jason Zimmerman (aka Mew2King) responded to a Player First post, questioning why the movement improvements arrived so late.

…but man, if this was how the relaunch started off we could’ve really had something.“

“I know everyone's been playing the blame game when there likely isn't one person or group solely responsible,” one Reddit user noted, “but if the relaunch had begun with this level of quality, we might have seen something special. (Apex Legends) has one of the worst monetization models out there, but it succeeded because it nailed the core gameplay from day one.”

It’s a painful situation, especially as players unite not only to mourn the game’s impending end but also to celebrate its dramatic improvement. Reddit user Desperate_Method4032 shared that the Season 5 update resolved “every issue I had with the game,” pointing to refined shield animations and overall polish that make MultiVersus look and feel much more complete. Despite the shutdown announcement, they expressed that the game’s newfound “potential” gives them hope Warner Bros. might reconsider.

“I'm not naïve,” Desperate_Method4032 explained. “I’m just a fan with a deep affection for the characters featured here. But is it wrong to hold onto a little hope for a comeback? There's simply too much potential to let it end like this—not when the game has finally found its stride.”

Unfortunately, despite hopeful speculation, Player First and Warner Bros. haven't shown any signs of reversing their decision to end service this summer. MultiVersus game director Tony Huynh recently took to X to share some final reflections, addressing long-standing player questions and concerns. Warner Bros. also disabled real-money purchases as of January 31, leaving only in-game currency for content unlocks. As a final gesture, the Season 5 premium battle pass has been made free for everyone.

MultiVersus will go offline permanently at 9 AM PT on May 30. While Warner Bros. is moving ahead with shutdown procedures, the community is finding solace in creating and sharing memes. It’s a bittersweet time for fighting game fans as they relish a title that finally meets their expectations, just as it reaches its conclusion.
