Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 fuses Sekiro, JRPG, Belle Époque
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 draws inspiration from various gaming influences while paying tribute to classic JRPG elements. Discover what inspired this unique game along with its first character trailer reveal.
Blending JRPG Roots with Modern Mechanics
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an innovative turn-based RPG incorporating real-time elements designed to enhance player immersion. While clearly nodding to classic JRPGs like Final Fantasy in its foundational mechanics, the game carves its own path. During the 2025 Game Developers Conference, producer François Meurisse discussed the game's influences with GamesRadar+.
Meurisse revealed Final Fantasy titles - particularly PlayStation-era classics FF7 through FF10 - served as primary inspiration. "These were formative childhood games for our director Guillaume Broche," he explained. "We aimed to capture that nostalgic turn-based essence while blending diverse influences. The JRPG legacy remains predominant in our gameplay foundation."
Despite these influences, the team prioritized developing distinct visual identity. "We consciously avoided mimicking anime/manga aesthetics common in Japanese titles," Meurisse noted. "Our art direction fused early 20th century Belle Époque with art deco and high fantasy elements through multiple iterations until we achieved something truly unique."
Expanding the Inspiration Palette
Beyond JRPG traditions, Expedition 33 incorporates souls-like elements. Meurisse highlighted Sekiro's influence: "Our defensive systems borrow FromSoftware's rhythmic, skill-based approach with real-time components."
The combat system also integrates deckbuilding concepts. "Unlike traditional MP systems," Meurisse elaborated, "our action point mechanics for skills derive inspiration from card-based strategy games."
First Character Reveal
As development progresses toward launch, the team plans weekly character showcases. The official Twitter account debuted Gustave on March 13 - a resourceful Lumière engineer wielding sword and pistol who leads the expedition against the sinister Paintress.
The trailer showcases Gustave's acrobatic traversal and combat prowess featuring devastating attacks and diverse skills. While specific character roles remain unconfirmed, these glimpses promise deep mechanical depth.
