"Avowed Sequel/DLC Hinted: Sales Satisfy Obsidian, Microsoft"
The director of Avowed, Carrie Patel, has hinted at exciting future possibilities for the franchise following the game's successful release. Read on to discover more about potential expansions or sequels, as well as other plans from the development team at Obsidian.
Avowed Director Aims to Expand the Universe
Possibility of Expansions or Sequels
Avowed has been a hit, with both Microsoft and Obsidian expressing satisfaction with its sales figures. In an interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for an expansion or sequel. Although no official plans have been announced, Patel's enthusiasm for continuing the saga is clear. "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it," she stated, indicating her interest in further developing the Avowed universe.
Changes in Avowed During Development
The development journey of Avowed was far from straightforward. Patel described the process as "messy," yet ultimately rewarding. Initially launched in 2018 amidst Obsidian's considerations to sell the company, the project faced numerous challenges. After Microsoft's acquisition and the game's announcement in 2020, significant changes were made, including the removal of multiplayer features and a leadership shift in January 2021, which led to a reboot of the game under Patel's direction.
Managing a team of over 80 people through these changes was challenging, but Patel's focus on enhancing the narrative and lore from the Pillars of Eternity series, along with transitioning to open zones rather than an open world, allowed for a more refined game experience. Reflecting on the development process, Patel noted, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
Obsidian's Vision for the Pillars of Eternity Franchise
Obsidian Wants Pillars of Eternity Tactics
With Avowed reinvigorating the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is exploring new avenues. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity and its sequel, expressed interest in developing a tactics game titled "Pillars: Tactics." Sawyer highlighted the widespread interest in tactics games within the studio, but also acknowledged the challenges in defining the project's scope, team size, and visual quality.
While the idea of a tactics game is appealing, Sawyer remains focused on his long-term goal of creating Pillars of Eternity 3 with a substantial budget of $100 million, akin to that of Baldur's Gate 3, a significant leap from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
