Sony Removes PS3 Classics from PS5 and PS4 in Major PS Plus Overhaul

Next month, PlayStation Plus subscribers will see 22 games removed from the service's library, including notable titles like Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of Sony's first-party games Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. This marks a significant change for the gaming community, especially for fans of these classic titles.

PlayStation Plus is a comprehensive online gaming service offered by PlayStation for its platforms. It provides a range of benefits, including free monthly games, limited-time trials, online multiplayer access, and exclusive discounts for members. Additionally, Extra and Premium members enjoy access to a catalog of hundreds of current and classic games, enhancing their gaming experience with a vast selection.

As reported by Push Square, the upcoming removal of these 22 games on May 20 includes two high-profile Sony PS3 titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, which are set to leave the PS Plus Premium library. This move is particularly noteworthy because these games are no longer available for purchase on the PS Store, making the PS Plus Premium streaming service the last option for players to experience them without owning a working PS3 console and the games themselves. Both titles were added to the library at the end of 2024, making their removal less than a year later a surprising development.

The Resistance series, developed by Insomniac Games, offers alternate history first-person shooter experiences. Following their work on the Ratchet and Clank franchise, Insomniac released three Resistance games for the PS3 before shifting focus to other projects such as Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank titles. Although it's uncommon for Sony to remove its first-party games from the service, this isn't the first instance; the unexpected removal of both Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West in August 2024 set a precedent. Unlike the Horizon games, which remained available for purchase, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will be completely inaccessible on modern consoles once they leave PS Plus.

Interestingly, Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be available on the service. Additionally, the more recent first-party PS4 title InFamous: Second Son is also scheduled for removal. The Resistance series has been dormant for a while, and recent comments from Insomniac's founder and outgoing president Ted Price highlighted unsuccessful efforts to develop Resistance 4. The series, much like Guerrilla Games' Killzone, seems to have been sidelined in favor of other projects.
