Sega: Sonic Racing CrossWorlds Full Game on Switch 2 Cartridge
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will launch as a physical Nintendo Switch edition featuring the complete base game pre-loaded on a 64GB game cartridge.
Switch 2 Game-Key Cards function differently – these physical cards contain download codes rather than game data. Players must download the full game after inserting the card, which has concerned collectors who prefer owning physical copies rather than digital licenses. Each Game-Key Card package is clearly labeled, but the approach still sparks debate.
The confirmation brings clarity to Sonic fans after weeks of mixed messaging about CrossWorlds' physical release. Sega has now officially verified through a new FAQ section that "the retail version includes the entire base game stored on a 64GB cartridge."
The FAQ also details cross-platform compatibility, confirming: Switch 2 players can compete with others across platforms, game progress transfers between Switch generations, and a $10 upgrade option will be available for transitioning to the Switch 2 version.
This contrasts with recent criticism aimed at Square Enix, which confirmed no upgrade path or save file compatibility for Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake on Switch 2.
CrossWorlds boasts an expansive lineup exceeding 30 playable racers when including DLC. Beyond series staples like Sonic, Tails, and Shadow, the roster now features surprising crossovers including SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar characters, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The September launch positions CrossWorlds directly against Switch 2's Mario Kart World – though Nintendo's franchise maintains its first-party character exclusivity. With simultaneous Switch and Switch 2 releases, the stage is set for renewed competition between gaming's iconic speedsters.
IGN's recent preview session with CrossWorlds yielded positive impressions, describing it as "a vibrant experience that delivers satisfying drift mechanics we're excited to master at launch."
