PS5 Disc Drive Scarcity Frustrates Consumers

Persistent PS5 Disc Drive Shortage Impacts PS5 Pro Owners

Since the November 2024 launch of the PS5 Pro, a significant shortage of the standalone PS5 disc drive continues to plague gamers. This issue stems from the PS5 Pro's design: it lacks a built-in disc drive, making the previously released accessory a necessity for those upgrading to the Pro model while retaining their physical game library.

This increased demand has created a perfect storm, with PS Direct (both US and UK) consistently reporting stock outages. The drives vanish almost instantly upon restocking. While some third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target occasionally offer drives, the availability is sporadic and insufficient to meet the overwhelming demand. The situation is further exacerbated by scalpers, who are acquiring drives in bulk and reselling them at significantly inflated prices, mirroring the challenges faced during the initial PS5 launch in 2020. This adds considerable expense to an already premium console purchase.

The lack of official comment from Sony regarding this ongoing shortage is notable, especially considering the company's previous efforts to address production bottlenecks. The PS5 Pro's omission of a disc drive has been a point of contention since its September unveiling, adding approximately $80 to the console's cost when purchasing the drive directly from Sony. Coupled with scalping activities, this leaves many PS5 Pro owners with limited options beyond waiting for improved supply and reduced demand – a resolution that currently seems distant.
