Persona 5: The Phantom X Global Release Being Considered by SEGA
Persona 5: The Phantom X Global Launch on the Horizon?
SEGA's recent financial report hints at a potential global release for Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X). The report indicates that the game's performance is meeting expectations and that international expansion, including a global launch, is being considered.
Currently in Open Beta, Limited Regions
Licensed by Atlus, P5X initially launched in a soft-launch open beta phase. It debuted in China on April 12, 2024, followed by Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, and Taiwan on April 18. Perfect World Games (South Korea) publishes the game, developed by their Chinese subsidiary, Black Wings Game Studio.
Players control a new silent protagonist, "Wonder," a high school student by day and a Persona-wielding Phantom Thief by night. Wonder's mission: combat societal injustices alongside familiar faces and new allies.
Wonder initially wields the Persona Janosik, inspired by Slovakian folklore and embodying a Robin Hood-esque theme. The original Persona 5 protagonist, Joker, and a new character, YUI, join Wonder's team.
P5X retains the turn-based combat, social simulation, and dungeon crawling elements of the main series, but adds a gacha system for character acquisition.
New Roguelike Mode: Heart Rail
Popular Persona content creator Faz showcased the new Heart Rail roguelike game mode in his recent gameplay video. This mode, reminiscent of Honkai: Star Rail's Simulated Universe, features power-up selection, varied maps, and stage completion rewards.
SEGA's Strong Performance and Future Plans
SEGA reported solid sales for new and existing titles, including Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, and Football Manager 2024. They also announced restructuring, creating a new "Gaming Business" segment focused on online gaming, further solidifying their presence in the North American online gaming market.
SEGA projects increased sales and profits for FY2025, with the Full Game segment aiming for 93 billion Yen (approximately 597 billion USD) in revenue. A new Sonic title is also anticipated for next year.
