Osmos is back on Google Play with a brand-new port after a brief absence

Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, it's back with a completely revamped version.

Remember the unique physics-based gameplay of Osmos? The goal was simple: absorb other microorganisms while avoiding the same fate. This deceptively simple yet award-winning puzzler was unavailable on Android for years, until now.

Released in 2010, Osmos now graces Google Play with a brand-new, modern Android port. Experience this micro-organic battle royale optimized for today's devices.

Hemisphere Games, the developer, explains in a blog post that initial Android development, aided by Apportable, was hampered by the latter's closure. This led to Osmos' removal from the Google Play Store due to incompatibility with current Android systems (it only ran on obsolete 32-bit systems). The game's triumphant return is thanks to a completely rebuilt port.

Osmos' innovative mechanics have, ironically through a process of osmosis, influenced countless subsequent games. Its pre-social media release is almost a missed opportunity; it would undoubtedly be a TikTok sensation today.

Osmos feels like a nostalgic gem, well worth revisiting. It's a reminder of a time when mobile gaming seemed limitless, a feeling many of us long to recapture.
