Nintendo Hints at New 3D Mario for Switch 2: 'Stay Tuned'

Nintendo has been dropping tantalizing hints about a new 3D Mario game, stirring excitement among fans eager for the next big adventure. During a recent interview with CNN, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser addressed the clamor for a new mainline Mario entry. Although he didn't confirm a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, his words suggest that fans won't have to wait too long for more news.

"Stay tuned," Bowser teased. "You know, we have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform."

While these comments fall short of a concrete announcement, they offer hope to those who were disappointed by the absence of a new 3D Mario game in the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup. When Nintendo unveiled its hybrid console sequel earlier this month, it showcased exciting titles like Donkey Kong Bananza, Mario Kart World, and others. However, a traditional 3D Mario platformer was notably missing from the list.

The last flagship Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, was released in October 2017, shortly after the original Switch launched. It's been nearly eight years since then, and although games like Donkey Kong Bananza might temporarily fill the void, many fans are still yearning for a Super Mario Odyssey 2 announcement. Given Mario's significant role in Nintendo's vast catalog, it would be surprising if a new 3D Mario game didn't surface soon.
