How To Unlock Chapter Select In NieR: Automata

Unlocking Chapter Select in NieR: Automata requires you to reach one of the true endings. To do this, you'll need to complete the game's three playthroughs and make a crucial choice during the final confrontation of the third playthrough. While these are commonly referred to as playthroughs, some fans call them chapters because each one unfolds a different segment of the overarching narrative.

After the credits roll at the end of each playthrough, make sure to save your game. Then, load that save file to continue the story as a different character. The final playthrough involves switching between multiple characters, and completing it unlocks the Chapter Select feature for that save file.

How Does Chapter Select Work In NieR: Automata

You can access the Chapter Select menu from two convenient locations:

  • From the main menu when loading your save file.
  • From any access point within the game world.

This menu allows you to jump to any chapter in the main story. When you use Chapter Select, all your progress, including weapons, levels, and items, carries over. You can even choose which character to play as, provided that chapter involves multiple playable characters.

Keep in mind that completed side quests cannot be replayed, regardless of the chapter you load. If you want to switch chapters mid-play, be sure to save at an access point; otherwise, any progress made, such as levels gained or items found, won't be saved. Chapter Select is an invaluable tool for exploring all the game's content, revisiting earlier choices, and striving to unlock every possible ending in NieR: Automata.
