Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Minecraft 2 Development

Minecraft 2 “Basically Announced” By Original Creator

Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has ignited excitement among fans by suggesting a potential sequel. A recent poll on X (formerly Twitter) revealed his consideration of developing a "spiritual successor" to his iconic creation.

Notch's X poll presented two options: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid and a Minecraft-inspired game. The latter overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes. This significant response seemingly prompted Notch to declare he'd "basically announced Minecraft 2."

However, Notch acknowledged the legal complexities. Microsoft acquired Mojang (Minecraft's developer) in 2014, meaning he cannot directly utilize the Minecraft IP. He assured fans that any new project would avoid infringing on Mojang's and Microsoft's work, expressing respect for their continued efforts.

He also voiced concerns about the challenges of creating a spiritual successor, noting that such projects don't always meet expectations. Despite these reservations, the overwhelming fan demand and potential financial success seem to be driving his decision.

While awaiting Notch's potential new game, fans can anticipate Minecraft-themed amusement parks opening in the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, and the release of the "Minecraft Movie" later in 2025.
