Microsoft Activision Aims to Make AA Games of AAA IPs
Microsoft and Activision Team Up for Smaller-Scale Games
A new team within Blizzard, primarily composed of King employees, is focusing on developing AA games based on existing franchises, according to reports from Windows Central. This strategic move follows Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023, granting access to a wealth of popular IPs.
This initiative aims to leverage King's mobile game expertise to create smaller-scale titles, contrasting with the large-budget AAA releases. The focus is expected to be on mobile platforms, given King's success with titles like Candy Crush. Past experience with mobile adaptations of existing IPs, such as Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! (since discontinued), provides a foundation for this new venture. However, the status of a previously announced Call of Duty mobile game remains unclear.
Microsoft's Mobile Gaming Ambitions
Microsoft's commitment to mobile gaming is evident, with CEO Phil Spencer highlighting its crucial role in Xbox's growth strategy at Gamescom 2023. He emphasized that the Activision Blizzard King acquisition was primarily driven by the mobile capabilities it offered. This aligns with Microsoft's broader goal of expanding its presence on the largest gaming platform: mobile phones.
Further solidifying their mobile ambitions, Microsoft is actively developing its own mobile app store, aiming to compete with Apple and Google. While specifics are limited, the anticipated release timeframe suggests a relatively near-term launch.
A New Approach to Game Development
The rising costs associated with AAA game development are prompting Microsoft to explore alternative strategies. The creation of smaller, more agile teams within its larger structure is a key element of this new approach.
Speculation abounds regarding the projects this new team may undertake. Possible candidates include mobile versions of popular franchises, such as a World of Warcraft mobile experience mirroring League of Legends: Wild Rift, or a mobile Overwatch title similar to Apex Legends Mobile or Call of Duty: Mobile. The potential for innovative and accessible adaptations of beloved IPs is significant.
