The developers at Warhorse Studios are frustrated with the ongoing criticism surrounding Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, emphasizing their desire to focus on crafting an enjoyable video game. During an interview with PC Gamer on February 3, 2025, KCD2’s PR Manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling shared his frustration over the game's backlash related to increased diversity.

Stolz-Zwilling remarked, "Several years ago, we were branded differently. Now we are branded this way. It seems like someone is always trying to label us, and we are just trying to make a cool video game." This statement follows criticism from fans and critics regarding the inclusion of LGBTQ+ content and other elements perceived as "woke."

Senior Game Designer Ondřej Bittner echoed these sentiments, stating that the team is not at fault for the current controversy. "We think the extreme voices are just never satisfied," he noted.

Set in Kuttenberg, KCD2 features a more diverse setting than its predecessor. Bittner explained, "There's more ethnic diversity in Kuttenberg because it's the royal mint." As the second most important city in Bohemia and the country’s financial hub, Kuttenberg attracts people from various parts of the world, contributing to its diverse population.

Bittner highlighted the inclusion of diverse cultural elements in the game, such as characters from Italy, German-speaking individuals, and a Jewish quarter. He emphasized the importance of not just including these groups but also representing their unique worldviews, which he believes are often missing in media claiming to be diverse.

Stolz-Zwilling clarified that neither their publisher Plaion nor Embracer mandated specific agendas for KCD2. Instead, community feedback guided their approach. "Everything makes sense. Everything we've included has been thoroughly researched and verified," he assured.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Pre-Orders Unaffected By Recent Backlash

Warhorse Studios addressed recent rumors about players seeking refunds for KCD2 pre-orders amidst the backlash. KCD2 Writer Daniel Vávra took to Twitter (X) to clarify that the game's sales-return ratio remains unchanged despite the controversy. He noted that KCD2's lower position on Steam charts a few weeks ago was due to discounts on nine other popular games, which also affected Monster Hunter: Wilds pre-order sales.

In January 2025, Vávra faced attacks over KCD2's inclusion of queer representation, sparking rumors of a ban in Saudi Arabia due to unskippable LGBT+ scenes. Vávra debunked these rumors, emphasizing that "It is a ROLE PLAYING GAME, so it is purely up to the player what decisions they make and for all the decisions they make, they are responsible for the consequences that correspond to the morals and social norms of the time."
