"Ex-Bethesda Dev Predicts Fallout 3 Remaster to Enhance 'Not Good' Gun Combat"
With the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, fans are eagerly anticipating which Bethesda title will be next in line for a remaster. Speculation is rife that Fallout 3 could be on the horizon, especially after leaks surfaced in 2023. If Bethesda decides to remaster this iconic 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG, they have a prime opportunity to enhance several aspects of the game, as suggested by Bruce Nesmith, one of its original designers.
Nesmith, speaking to VideoGamer, highlighted the need for significant improvements in Fallout 3's gun combat, which he described as "not good." He believes that a remastered version would feature shooting mechanics more akin to those in Fallout 4. "What did you see in Fallout 4? That will tell you what they felt was necessary to change from Fallout 3," Nesmith explained. He praised the extensive work done on gun combat in Fallout 4, noting that it was a substantial improvement over the first attempt at a shooter-style game in Fallout 3.
The recent Oblivion Remastered, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, set a high bar with its array of visual and feature enhancements. It boasts 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, alongside meaningful updates to leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. New dialogue, a proper third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology have also been introduced. These changes have been well-received, with some fans suggesting that Oblivion Remastered could be considered a remake. Bethesda, however, has clarified its decision to opt for a remaster rather than a full remake.
Nesmith anticipates that Fallout 3 Remastered would follow suit with similar enhancements. He noted that the combat in Fallout 3 did not compare favorably to other shooters at the time of its release and emphasized the improvements made in Fallout 4. "It was brought up to something that, at least on the surface, looks like it exceeds the most recent graphics update in Skyrim," Nesmith said about Oblivion Remastered, dubbing it "Oblivion 2.0."
Bethesda is currently juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential expansions for Starfield, ongoing work on Fallout 76, and the Fallout TV series, which is set to explore New Vegas in its second season. With such a packed schedule, fans can look forward to a rich lineup of content in the coming years.
