"New Director Set for Live-Action Street Fighter Film"
The iconic fighting game series, Street Fighter, is set to hit the big screen once again, and this time, it's under the direction of Kitao Sakurai. Known for his work on the wildly entertaining comedy show, The Eric Andre Show, Sakurai brings a unique perspective to this project, which is being produced by Legendary Entertainment. The film has already secured a release date of March 20, 2026, and Capcom, the game's creator, is deeply involved in the adaptation, promising a faithful representation of the beloved franchise.
This new Street Fighter movie marks another attempt to bring the game's high-energy battles and colorful characters to cinema, following the memorable 1994 film that featured Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia in a critically acclaimed performance as M. Bison. While the 1994 film has become a cult classic, the upcoming adaptation aims to blend the game's action with a touch of absurdity, a direction hinted at by Sakurai's involvement.
Casting details for the new film are yet to be announced, but fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters come to life on screen. Previously, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, known for Talk to Me, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's appointment suggests a shift towards a more humorous and perhaps surreal take on the Street Fighter universe, which could be thrilling for fans who enjoy the game's more whimsical aspects.
While waiting for the movie, fans can dive into the latest installment of the game, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced the new character Mai Shiranui. For more on the game, you can check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review.
