BG3 Patch Delivers Surge in Modding
Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!
The highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has arrived, and the player response has been phenomenal, especially regarding the sheer volume of mods.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke highlighted the impressive uptake, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of the September 5th release. This figure was further amplified by Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, who reported that installs have surpassed three million and are still climbing rapidly.
Patch 7's impact extends beyond the modding community. It introduced significant new content, including alternative evil endings, enhanced split-screen functionality, and Larian's own integrated Mod Manager. This streamlined tool allows players to easily browse, install, and manage mods directly within the game.
The existing modding tools, accessible via Steam, empower modders to create custom storylines using Larian's Osiris scripting language. Modders can also integrate custom scripts and utilize basic debugging features, with the option to publish directly from the toolkit.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
PC Gamer reported on a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) that unlocks a full level editor and reactivates previously disabled features within Larian's editor. While Larian has previously been cautious about providing complete access to its development tools ("We're a game development company, not a tools company," Vincke previously stated to PC Gamer), the community's enthusiasm is undeniable.
Larian is actively pursuing cross-platform modding support, acknowledging the considerable challenge of ensuring compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed that PC support will launch first, followed by consoles after addressing any potential issues and navigating the necessary submission processes.
Beyond the modding surge, Patch 7 boasts a range of improvements: refined UI, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and numerous bug fixes and performance enhancements. With further updates planned, we can anticipate more news regarding Larian's cross-platform modding ambitions.
