Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Reiterates Support For The Switch 2, Saying Nintendo Has Been a 'Great Partner'
Following the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, the partnership between Nintendo and Xbox appears poised to continue seamlessly. Microsoft's head of gaming, Phil Spencer, has recently reaffirmed his commitment to the Switch platform, viewing it as a valuable avenue to engage with players who are not part of the Xbox ecosystem.
In a recent interview with Variety, Spencer addressed questions about specific projects planned for the Nintendo Switch 2. He emphasized that just as Xbox has supported the original Switch, they are eager to extend that support to the Switch 2.
"Nintendo has been a great partner. We see it as a unique opportunity to reach players who aren’t on PC or Xbox," Spencer explained. "It allows us to expand our community and connect with people who are passionate about our franchises. This is crucial for us as we continue to invest in our games."
"I’m really a big believer in what Nintendo means for this industry, and I'm committed to continuing our support for them," Spencer added. "Receiving their support for our franchises is an important part of our future strategy."Spencer has consistently been a vocal supporter of the Nintendo Switch 2, praising Nintendo's innovative approach when the first teaser for the Switch 2 was released. At that time, he also confirmed Xbox's intention to broaden the availability of its games across various platforms, including PlayStation, Steam, and Nintendo's consoles.
When asked by Variety if the Switch 2 reveal made him eager to announce Xbox's next console lineup, Spencer remained composed. "No. I think all of us in this industry should focus on nurturing our communities and the player base we’re building," he stated. "I draw inspiration from what many creators and other platform holders are doing. However, I have confidence in the plans we have set."
The Xbox head reiterated their commitment to delivering games across as many platforms as possible, including cloud, PC, and consoles. Titles like Pentiment and Obsidian's Grounded have already made successful transitions to Nintendo platforms, and it will be fascinating to see what Xbox brings to the Switch 2 once the console officially launches.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to debut on June 5, 2025. While pre-orders have not yet started, keep an eye on our Switch 2 pre-order hub page for updates on when they might become available.
