According to a report by Insider Gaming, the extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, which was initially set in Alaska and known under the codename Project Maverick, has undergone a complete reboot. Originally planned as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7, the project faced a significant overhaul following an internal review. Despite receiving positive feedback from employees and testers, Ubisoft's management opted to redirect most resources to Project Blackbird (Far Cry 7). The decision to reassign the technical team to other tasks marked the end of the multiplayer component.

The responsibility for the project has been transferred to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio known for its expertise in development support. The majority of the original development team has been reassigned to work on the next installment of the Far Cry series.

Insider Tom Henderson reported in mid-December 2024 that Far Cry 7 will immerse players in a gripping atmosphere of tension and desperation. The game's narrative centers on the protagonist's mission to rescue their kidnapped family from a sinister conspiracy cult. This cult is conducting terrifying experiments using hallucinogens on animals and children. Players must race against time to save their loved ones within a tight 72-hour in-game window, translating to 24 real-time hours. This time constraint is a pivotal gameplay mechanic, intensifying the urgency and pressure on players.

A unique feature of Far Cry 7 is the timer displayed on the protagonist's wristwatch, serving as a constant reminder of the ticking clock. This element will not only amplify the urgency but also compel players to make swift, strategic decisions. Far Cry 7 aims to offer a distinctive experience where every second is critical, and every decision can lead to significant outcomes.
