Switch 2 Features New Controller Functions
New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support
The upcoming Switch 2 is set to redefine gaming with its innovative Joy-Con controllers, featuring what appears to be mouse support. On February 6, 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a patent filed by Nintendo that sheds light on the new functionalities of the Switch 2's Joy-Con.
This patent highlights the controllers' mouse-like capabilities, sparked by the brief glimpse in the Switch 2 reveal trailer where a controller was seen being dragged across a surface. This move confirmed the rumors and showcased the potential for the Joy-Con to be used as a mouse.
Nintendo has remained secretive about the Switch 2 details, making this patent a significant reveal into the console's new features.
Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers
The Switch 2's Joy-Con retains the detachable design familiar from the original Nintendo Switch, but introduces the groundbreaking feature of functioning as a mouse. According to the patent, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."
Alongside this, the Joy-Con can be charged using a new dock that supports up to two controllers simultaneously. A new magnetic attachment also connects the Joy-Con to the console, complete with a wrist strap reminiscent of the original Joy-Con design.
The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers, resembling a split standard controller, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse-like functionality. These can be combined into a full controller using a separate attachment, offering versatile gaming options.
It's important to note that the features described in the patent might not fully reflect the final product for the Switch 2, as Nintendo has yet to officially announce the specifics of its Joy-Con or other related accessories.
