"Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatible with Non-GameCube Games, Potential Issues: Nintendo"

Author : Hannah May 02,2025

Nintendo has provided clarity on the compatibility of its newly announced GameCube controller with the Nintendo Switch 2, highlighting potential "issues" when using it for games outside the GameCube library. This information was initially touched upon during the recent 60-minute Nintendo Direct, where the controller was unveiled. The fine print at the event noted that the controller's compatibility is limited to "Nintendo GameCube" games available through the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, not extending to other Switch 2 titles.

In a follow-up statement to Nintendo Life, Nintendo emphasized that the GameCube controller is primarily designed for playing the GameCube classics within the Nintendo Switch Online service. While it might be possible to use the controller with other Nintendo Switch 2 games, players should be aware that "there may be some issues" due to the controller lacking "all the buttons and features" present in more modern controllers.

Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is exclusively compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system and cannot be used with the original Nintendo Switch. "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games," the company stated.
