Stardew Valley: How To Befriend The Dwarf
This guide delves into the enigmatic Dwarf of Stardew Valley, offering insights into befriending this unique character. Unlike other villagers, building rapport with the Dwarf requires deciphering a new language and presents different friendship mechanics.
Updated January 8, 2024: This guide reflects recent Stardew Valley updates (1.5 and 1.6) impacting NPC interactions, including movie theater activities and gift preferences.
Meeting the Dwarf
Located in the mines, to the right of the first floor entrance, a boulder obscures the Dwarf's shop. Destroy this obstacle (using a copper pickaxe or bomb) to reveal the Dwarf.
Unlocking Dwarvish Communication
The Dwarf doesn't speak common tongue. To communicate, collect all four Dwarf Scrolls (artifacts) and donate them to the museum. Gunther will reward you with a Dwarvish translation guide. Return to the mines to finally converse and shop.
Gift Giving Strategies
Gift-giving is crucial for friendship. The Dwarf accepts two gifts weekly. His birthday (Summer 22) multiplies friendship gains by eight.
Top-Tier Gifts (+80 Friendship):
- Gemstones: Amethyst
, Aquamarine
, Jade
, Ruby
, Topaz

Good Gifts (+45 Friendship):

Gifts to Avoid: Mushrooms, foraged items, and universally hated gifts (excluding artifacts) decrease friendship.
Movie Theater Encounters
Once unlocked, invite the Dwarf to the movie theater. He loves all films but has specific snack preferences: He loves Stardrop Sorbet and Rock Candy; he likes Cotton Candy, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jawbreaker, Salmon Burger, Sour Slimes, and Star Cookie. Other concessions are disliked.
