Sony to Remove PS4 Games from PlayStation Plus in 2024
Sony has announced a significant shift in its PlayStation Plus service, focusing exclusively on PlayStation 5 games starting in January 2026. This change will see PlayStation 4 games being phased out of the PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog. The update was revealed alongside the announcement of February 2025's monthly titles on the PlayStation Blog.
"As we shift to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog," Sony stated. This move won't affect the PS4 games that subscribers have already claimed, but titles in the Games Catalog will remain available until they are rotated out as part of the monthly refresh.
Sony emphasized its commitment to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience. "We’ll continue to evolve the experience of PlayStation Plus and optimize the benefits you receive, including exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, online game save storage, and more," the company added. As part of this transition, Sony plans to introduce new PS5 titles to the service monthly.
The PlayStation 4, launched in 2013, has enjoyed a long and successful run, but with the PlayStation 5 hitting the market in 2020, Sony has noted that many players have already transitioned to the newer console and are increasingly interested in PS5 titles.
It remains uncertain whether Sony will reclassify PS4 games into the Classics Catalog, which currently features ports and remasters of games from the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3. Sony is expected to provide more details on this closer to the implementation date.
