New PlayStation Game Inspired by Smash Bros Coming Soon
Summary
- Bungie's mysterious game, code-named Gummy Bears, has reportedly shifted developers and is now being developed at a new PlayStation studio.
- Although primarily a MOBA, Gummy Bears is rumored to draw inspiration from Super Smash Bros., featuring a percentage-based damage system instead of traditional health bars.
- The game has been in development for at least three years but may still be years away from release. It is targeting a younger demographic than any previous Bungie game.
A first-party PlayStation game code-named Gummy Bears is said to take significant inspiration from the Super Smash Bros. series, according to a recent report that also sheds light on other aspects of this enigmatic PlayStation project.
The first rumors about Gummy Bears surfaced in August 2023 when The Game Post reported that a MOBA title with this codename was in development at Bungie. However, a year later, Bungie announced the layoff of 220 employees—a 17% reduction in its workforce. During that announcement, the Destiny developer also revealed that an additional 155 of its staff members would be integrated into Sony Interactive Entertainment in the near future.
These integration efforts have reportedly led Sony to establish a new PlayStation studio, according to The Game Post, which cites unnamed sources familiar with the matter. This new subsidiary, with approximately 40 employees, is said to have taken over the development of Gummy Bears. While the upcoming first-party PlayStation game is still likely years away from release, its current development stage remains undisclosed. Despite the scarcity of details about Gummy Bears, The Game Post reports that it will adopt a feature from Super Smash Bros.
Gummy Bears Reportedly Won't Have Health Bars, Similar to Smash Bros.
Specifically, Gummy Bears is said to feature a health system without traditional health bars. Instead, the equivalent health system will act as a modifier that determines how far a character is knocked back upon being hit. As the percentage-based damage accumulates, characters can be knocked off the map, a mechanic strikingly similar to the damage percent system used in the Super Smash Bros. series.
Gummy Bears is expected to include three character classes typical of MOBA games: Attack, Defense, and Support. The game will also offer multiple game modes and is described as having a cozy, vibrant, and "lo-fi" aesthetic. These characteristics differ significantly from Bungie's previous work, which The Game Post's sources suggest is a deliberate choice to distinguish Gummy Bears from other studio offerings and to appeal to a younger demographic.
Gummy Bears has reportedly been in development since at least 2022, including its time at Bungie. The recent claim of a developer switch aligns with reports of PlayStation establishing a new studio in Los Angeles, assuming this California-based division is the one working on Gummy Bears.
