"Nintendo Switch 2 Supports NFC, Likely Compatible with Amiibo"
Recent regulatory filings have confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will retain Near Field Communication (NFC) functionality, suggesting full Amiibo compatibility for the next-generation console. As reported by The Verge, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) documents reveal that the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) module is embedded in the right Joy-Con—just like on the original Switch. This raises an exciting possibility: existing Amiibo figures and cards may continue to unlock in-game content on the new system.
In addition to NFC support, the FCC documentation confirms dual charging options via both the bottom and top USB-C ports—a feature many fans anticipated after the console’s initial reveal. The Nintendo Switch 2 also supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) with up to 80MHz bandwidth, marking a significant upgrade from the Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) capabilities of its predecessor. However, there was no mention of Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E support in the filings, as noted by The Verge.
Power specifications indicate the console remains capped at 15V, though the inclusion of a 20V-compatible AC adapter hints at potentially faster charging speeds—exact performance details remain unclear at this time.
Last month, a newly uncovered Nintendo patent hinted that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers could be mounted upside down. This design tweak suggests a shift in how gyroscopic controls function, operating more like smartphones without screen orientation locks. Unlike the original Switch, which used mechanical rails to secure Joy-Cons in place, the new controllers appear to rely on magnets—enabling attachment on either side of the console.
While this change doesn't dramatically alter the hardware experience, it gives players more flexibility in positioning features such as buttons and the headphone jack. If implemented in the final version, this reversible design could inspire creative gameplay mechanics and offer a fresh twist on controller usability.

If the Switch 2 performs as described in recent patents, Nintendo is expected to provide a full explanation during an upcoming Nintendo Direct event scheduled for April 2 at 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time.
The release window for the Switch 2 also appears to be drawing closer. While Nintendo has yet to officially announce a date, some industry insiders speculate a launch between June and September 2025. Supporting this theory are upcoming hands-on events set to run through June, along with comments from Nacon, publisher of *Greedfall 2*, who indicated the console will launch before September.
The Nintendo Switch 2 was first teased in January with a short trailer confirming key features such as backwards compatibility and the inclusion of a second USB-C port. Many details remain under wraps—including specifics about upcoming titles and the purpose of the mysterious new Joy-Con button—though speculation continues to grow, including theories around a potential Joy-Con mouse function.
