NIKKE Evangelion Crossover: Player Disappointment Exposed

Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The August 2024 crossover event, featuring Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato, encountered several setbacks.

Where the Collaboration Went Wrong:

The initial designs for the Evangelion characters, created jointly by Shift Up and the NIKKE team, were deemed too suggestive by the Evangelion creators. Subsequent modifications, while satisfying the licensors, failed to resonate with players. The resulting designs, while faithful to the originals, lacked the appeal to entice players.

Player Feedback and Concerns:

The underwhelming costumes weren't the only issue. Players found little incentive to invest in limited-time characters or skins, particularly given the lack of significant visual differences between the new skins and the base models. Asuka's gacha skin, the most expensive option, was criticized for its striking resemblance to her standard appearance.

The collaboration diluted NIKKE's established identity—its signature over-the-top anime aesthetic and compelling narrative. The event felt drawn-out and lacked inspiration, failing to capitalize on the game's strengths.

Shift Up acknowledges the negative feedback and promises to incorporate it into future collaborations. The hope is that future events will deliver more compelling and engaging content.

Both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE are available on the Google Play Store. Instead of underwhelming crossovers, players anticipate a return to form with exciting new content in the coming months.
