MultiVersus Shuts Down, Players Mourn Beloved Game
MultiVersus, the free-to-play crossover fighting game released in 2024, is set to go offline permanently very soon.
Player First Games confirmed back in January that MultiVersus Season 5 would be its last, announcing the game will shut down for good on May 30, 2025, at 5 PM PDT (12 PM EDT). The title has been widely regarded as a significant disappointment for Warner Bros. Discovery; during a financial call in November 2024, the company acknowledged that MultiVersus performed well below expectations, leading to a $100 million write-down for its gaming division. This loss compounded the disappointing launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January, bringing total losses for the business to $300 million.
Just one month after the announcement, Warner Bros. revealed it was canceling its planned Wonder Woman game and closing three studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and Player First Games, the developer behind MultiVersus.
In a thread titled "Tomorrow MultiVersus shuts down, what are your final thoughts on the game?", hundreds of players shared comments reminiscing about their favorite moments.
"MultiVersus was a dream come true—a platform fighter that emphasized fast-paced offensive action and 2v2 gameplay with strong team synergy," one player wrote. "Beyond the core concept, the voice casting was outstanding. Many iconic actors returned to their roles, such as the late Kevin Conroy as Batman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Kate Micucci as Velma, John DiMaggio as Jake, and Eric Bauza as Bugs Bunny and Marvin the Martian. The character interactions during and after matches were also fantastic.
"While some character choices and move designs were puzzling—like the Banana Guard or Shaggy’s Ultra Instinct-inspired moves—I can’t deny that most of the movesets were brilliantly creative. There will never be another game quite like MultiVersus."

"Nothing compares to the exhilaration of playing the beta back in 2022," another player replied. "I was completely hooked on the game's fast-paced action. I even remember being sick and playing nothing else. I'll truly miss it and hope it makes a comeback someday, perhaps as a sequel."
"This game will always hold a special place in my heart, right next to PlayStation All-Stars," one fan shared nostalgically, while another added: "Tom and Jerry were among the most unique and enjoyable fighters I've ever experienced, reigniting my passion for fighting games."

Some fans are clinging to hope, though most accept that the game is gone for good—especially given "the licensing nightmare" involved in reviving it. Still, efforts are underway to preserve the experience after the servers go dark.
"While MultiVersus may not become a staple at social gatherings, its refreshing team-based mechanics make it a standout platform fighter for online play," we noted in IGN’s MultiVersus review, where it earned an 8/10.
