Mobile Suit Gundam Live Action Film Now in Full Production
Exciting news for fans of the iconic anime and toy franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam: a live-action film adaptation is now officially in full production. Bandai Namco and Legendary have signed an agreement to co-finance this much-anticipated project, bringing new life to the beloved series on the big screen.
First announced back in 2018, the project had remained relatively quiet until recent updates from Legendary and the newly established Bandai Namco Filmworks America. This development signals that fans can now eagerly anticipate the release of the first-ever live-action Gundam film.
The film, yet to receive an official title, will be penned and directed by Kim Mickle, known for her work on Sweet Tooth. It is slated for a global theatrical release, promising to bring the epic saga to audiences worldwide.
This marks the franchise's first venture into live-action, expanding its already vast universe which includes 25 anime series, 34 animated films, 27 original anime productions, and a highly successful toy line. Together, these elements generate over $900 million annually.
"We plan to steadily announce details as they become finalized," stated Legendary and Bandai Namco. While no specific release dates or plot details have been disclosed yet, a teaser poster has been released to build anticipation.
"Mobile Suit Gundam, which began broadcasting in 1979, established the genre of 'real robot anime.' It moved away from the traditional good versus evil narrative prevalent in robot anime at the time, offering instead realistic portrayals of war, detailed scientific explorations, and complex human dramas. The series treated robots as 'weapons' known as 'mobile suits,' sparking a massive cultural phenomenon," they added.
