Every LEGO Chess Set Ever Released

Author : Thomas Apr 02,2025

LEGO patented its signature "binding brick" in 1958, but it wasn't until nearly 50 years later, in 2005, that LEGO released its first official chess build. This fact surprised me during my research, despite my extensive experience with LEGO. The delay in releasing a LEGO Chess set seemed odd, considering its potential to appeal to a broad audience.

In 2005, LEGO's primary focus was on children, with little attention to adult fans. It wasn't until 2007 that LEGO began catering to adults, and the concept of integrating LEGO into everyday life, or "LEGO lifestyle branding," didn't gain momentum until around 2020. What we now see as commonplace in 2025 was groundbreaking when the first LEGO chess set was released in 2005, especially since earlier builds were mostly miniature playsets rather than representations of real-life objects.

Below is a comprehensive history of every LEGO Chess Set, totaling 12 sets, with the most recent one still available for purchase in 2025. For more chess set options, check out our guide to the best overall chess sets.
