The franchise is particularly dear to Kingsley, who is currently exploring innovative ways to elevate it further. He envisions expanding the theme of world domination beyond the traditional base-building simulator genre into various strategic game formats. The sequel, Evil Genius 2, which was released in 2021, garnered "mostly positive" reviews from critics on Metacritic. However, the response from the gaming community was less favorable. Despite enhancements in graphics and efforts to correct previous shortcomings, many players felt that the sequel did not live up to the standards set by the original Evil Genius. Criticisms were particularly aimed at the global map mechanics, the diminished capabilities of minions, and the overall degradation of various in-game structures.
