Funko Responds as Itch.io Recovers from Shut Down by AI-Powered Brandshield
Funko has addressed the temporary suspension of the Itch.io indie game marketplace, allegedly caused by their brand protection software, BrandShield. Here's Funko's statement:
Funko's Response: No Full Takedown Intended
Funko's official X (formerly Twitter) post emphasizes their respect for the indie game community. They acknowledge that BrandShield flagged an Itch.io page mimicking the Funko Fusion development website, leading to a takedown request. Crucially, Funko clarifies they did not request a takedown of the entire Itch.io platform and expressed relief at its swift restoration.
Funko is now in private discussions with Itch.io to resolve the issue and appreciates the community's understanding.
However, Itch.io owner Leaf's Hacker News post reveals a more complex situation. It wasn't a simple takedown request, but a "fraud and phishing report" sent to both Itch.io's host and registrar. The registrar's automated system responded by taking down the entire domain, despite Leaf's immediate action to remove the offending page. Leaf's post also notes that Funko's team contacted his mother, a detail omitted from Funko's official statement.
