Elder Scrolls Online Subclasses Come After 11 Long Years of Fans Requesting It

The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has finally introduced a feature that fans have been eagerly awaiting for over a decade: subclasses. This exciting addition allows for deeper customization and enhances the gameplay experience. Dive in to discover how subclasses work and what's on the horizon for ESO.

Elder Scrolls Online Direct Updates

Over 3000 Combinations of Skill Lines

As ESO celebrates its 10th Anniversary, Zenimax Online Studios is rolling out a series of updates, highlighted by the introduction of subclasses. Announced during the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10, this feature addresses a long-standing request from the community. Previously, players had to create new characters to explore new skill trees, a process that could be frustrating in an MMO setting. With subclasses, players can now mix and match skill lines without the need to start over.

To unlock this feature, players must reach level 50. Upon reaching this milestone, they can retain one skill line from their base class and swap out two others with any of the six available classes. This flexibility results in over 3000 unique combinations, enabling players to tailor their gameplay to their preferred style.

ESO Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the new system, noting that extensive testing has been conducted to ensure balance, even with the anticipated increase in power levels.

Seasons of the Worm Cult

Zenimax Online Studios is also introducing a new approach to content delivery with seasonal updates. Studio Director Matt Firor explained that this shift will allow the team to experiment with new ideas and gameplay systems more frequently, enhancing the narrative and gameplay experience.

The upcoming chapter, "Seasons of the Worm Cult," continues the saga from the original Molag Bal storyline, set 10 years later. Players will explore the new Isle of Solstice zone, investigating the resurgence of the Worm Cult. Producer Susan Kath noted that while this season will span most of the year, future seasons will typically last between 3 to 6 months. Zenimax also plans to revisit past storylines with "remix" seasons, with a Dark Brotherhood-themed season teased for the future.
