Dynasty Warriors: Origins - How To Switch Characters

Quick Links

In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, you primarily play as the Wanderer on his quest for peace. This journey presents many story choices, and you'll often have companions fighting alongside you.

While companions remain at your side on the battlefield, you can temporarily control them. These companions are exceptionally powerful, often surpassing the Wanderer in combat effectiveness, even with his upgrades. Here's how to switch characters:

Character Switching in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Character switching is only possible during battles where a companion is present. Before a battle, your companion is listed as the final option in the pre-battle menu. You can choose to fight alone, but you cannot directly select a companion to begin the battle with. Once the battle starts, your companion's health bar appears below yours in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Beneath their health bar is a blue meter, similar to your Musou gauge. This meter fills as you fight, accelerating with actions like:

  • Parrying attacks
  • Perfect dodging
  • Attacking Officers
  • Utilizing Weapon Arts

Most combat actions contribute to filling this meter, albeit at varying speeds.

Once the companion's blue meter is full, a "Change Character" button appears beside it. Press and hold this button for approximately one second to switch characters. The button is the View button on Xbox, C on PC, or the Touchpad on PlayStation.

Playing as Companions in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Switching characters should be strategically timed for the midst of intense combat, as companions are exceptionally strong. Control of the companion is temporary, lasting roughly a minute. The blue meter that triggered the switch will gradually deplete, indicating the remaining time. Your new character will start with full Bravery and a selection of highly effective combat arts.

Switching also initiates a powerful attack, so aim carefully. The companion will also have a full Musou gauge and health bar, enabling immediate use of their special attack to overwhelm enemies.
