Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy: Guardians' Comprehensive Guide
Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just unveiled an exciting roadmap for Destiny 2, dubbed the "Year of Prophecy." This year promises four major content releases, including two new expansions and two significant updates that cater to both paying and free-to-play players.
Kicking things off is the free update, Rite of the Nine, which reimagines dungeon diving for both veterans and newcomers. Dive into familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, but with unique twists and refreshed weapons that will keep even the most seasoned Guardians on their toes. Reconnect with Orin and explore new depths starting today.
On July 15, the first paid expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, launches, marking the beginning of a multiyear saga centered around the enigmatic Nine. Meet new ally Lodi and the Warlock Vanguard, Ikora, as they step into the spotlight. Explore the new destination, Kepler, designed with puzzle-solving and deep exploration in mind. Expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Simultaneously, on July 15, major core game innovations will be introduced, including revamped armor and gear systems to enhance buildcrafting opportunities. A new activity selection screen, the Portal, will streamline your gameplay experience. Choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the new Solo Ops tailored for individual players seeking quick, self-contained sessions. With 50 new modifiers, you can customize your gameplay and tackle new challenges, while curated activity rotations ensure there's always something fresh to pursue.

Following The Edge of Fate, the Ash & Iron update arrives on September 9, with the second expansion, Destiny 2: Renegades, launching on December 2. Inspired by the legendary Star Wars universe, Renegades promises to blend Destiny's unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements. Finally, the Shadow & Order update rolls out on March 3, 2025.
These announcements come as a positive development for the Destiny 2 community, especially following the layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, which represented 17% of Bungie's workforce, less than a year after another 100 layoffs.
While Destiny 2 continues to evolve, Bungie is also working on the upcoming Marathon reboot. In IGN's hands-on preview of Marathon, it was noted that the game looks promising in its alpha state and is expected to satisfy the Bungie PvP itch when it launches on PC and consoles in September.
