Danny Dyer and Rockstar Games: A Curious Connection Explained

If you follow Rockstar Games on X (formerly Twitter), you may have done a double-take when the Grand Theft Auto developer posted about an upcoming British film, Marching Powder, starring actor Danny Dyer. The tweet read:

From our friends Nick Love and Danny Dyer, the absolute legends behind The Football Factory... @MarchingPowder_ — a proper naughty comedy out tomorrow in the UK and Ireland.

But why would Rockstar Games, with over 21 million followers, promote what appears to be a relatively small UK-based film? And who exactly is Danny Dyer? Let’s break it down.

Who is Danny Dyer?

Daniel John Dyer, known simply as Danny Dyer, is a well-known British actor hailing from East London. If you're based in the UK, chances are you already recognize him—his face is practically synonymous with working-class British cinema. As Rockstar put it, he's an "absolute legend"—and according to Urban Dictionary, that means someone who embodies humor, recklessness, originality, and just the right amount of sensitivity.

Dyer has been acting since 1993 and has carved out a niche playing tough, no-nonsense characters. Off-screen, he’s equally recognizable for his outspoken personality and unfiltered opinions on life, politics, and society. He’s often described as the “tough uncle” figure everyone wishes they had.

He also keeps things entertaining online. Case in point:

Roll on bonfire night..........it's gonna get strapped to a great big massive fuck off Rocket so it can join the other Furbys in the sky...

How is Danny Dyer Connected to Rockstar Games?

Even if you don’t know Danny Dyer by name, if you’ve played GTA: Vice City or San Andreas, you’ve definitely heard his voice. In Vice City, Dyer voiced Kent Paul, the shady manager of the fictional Scottish rock band Love Fist. He reprised the role in San Andreas, where Kent Paul represented another act—the Gurning Chimps—and later worked as a producer for rapper Madd Dogg.

But there's more to Dyer’s link with Rockstar than just voice work. Back in 2004, he starred in The Football Factory, a gritty British film directed by Nick Love. That film was produced by none other than Rockstar Games. Yes, believe it or not, Rockstar once dabbled in feature film production.

Now, Marching Powder reunites Dyer with director Nick Love. While not a sequel to The Football Factory, the film explores similar themes—football hooliganism, heavy drinking, drug use, and a uniquely British brand of dark humor.

Despite the enthusiastic social media post, Rockstar Games isn't involved in Marching Powder. However, the studio is clearly showing support due to its past collaboration with Dyer and Love on The Football Factory.

Is Kent Paul Returning in GTA 6?

Short answer: Nobody knows. But let’s explore the possibility anyway.

It’s worth noting that the GTA series is divided into two distinct universes: the 3D era (PS2/PSP games) and the HD era (starting with GTA IV). These worlds generally don’t overlap in terms of narrative continuity. For example, San Andreas’ Los Santos looks very different from GTA V’s version of the same city, and characters from older titles rarely make direct appearances in newer ones.

However, that doesn’t mean there’s zero crossover. Grove Street, CJ’s neighborhood from San Andreas, makes a reappearance in GTA Online. Several gangs—including the Ballas—are present across both universes. Lazlow, the eccentric radio host, has appeared in multiple games spanning both eras. And notably, Kent Paul’s name appears on the Vinewood Walk of Fame in GTA Online.

So could Kent Paul return in GTA VI? It's entirely possible. But a promotional post about Marching Powder isn’t giving us any new clues.

Final Thoughts

Rockstar’s post celebrating Marching Powder is less about revealing GTA 6 secrets and more about nostalgia and respect for collaborators from their early days. Danny Dyer’s connection to Rockstar runs deeper than most fans realize, and this moment on social media serves as a nod to that shared history.

For now, we’ll keep watching, waiting, and theorizing—just like always.
