Welch, BG3's companion narrative lead, hailed the scene as a "watershed moment," praising Larian Studios for uniquely responding to the game's fanfiction community. This unprecedented move, he argued, validated fan desires.

The romance option with Halsin, a druid who transforms into a bear, wasn't initially planned. Halsin's bear form, initially intended for combat, became a romantic element, reflecting his emotional struggles. Welch credits the game's fanfiction community, which expressed a strong desire for "Daddy Halsin," for this development. He confirmed that Halsin wasn't initially conceived as a romantic interest.

Welch's presentation highlighted fanfiction's crucial role in sustaining game communities, particularly romance-focused narratives, which often extend engagement long after the game's release. He emphasized the importance of this community to women and LGBTQIA+ players, key contributors to BG3's ongoing popularity.

"This scene represents a significant shift," Welch stated, "where the fanfiction community isn't a niche, but a major audience whose preferences are directly addressed."

From Gag to Game-Changer

Halsin's bear transformation in a romantic context began as a humorous, off-screen idea. However, Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke and senior writer John Corcoran saw its potential and integrated it into Halsin's romance arc.

Welch explained, "The bear transformation was initially a throwaway gag for another scene. But Swen and John, while developing major romance scenes, decided to elevate it and make it a central element of Halsin's character."
