Tides of Annihilation Arthurian Knights Concept is Tencent's Appeal to Westerners
In a recent interview with Wccftech, the developers at Eclipse Glow Games shed light on the unique concept behind their upcoming game, Tides of Annihilation. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic London and draws heavily from Arthurian myths, aiming to captivate a Western audience. Dive in to learn more about its intriguing premise and what the future holds.
Tides of Annihilation Targets Western Gamers
Embracing Arthurian Myths and Knights
During Gamescom 2024, Eclipse Glow Games, a China-based studio, discussed their game's concept and mechanics with Wccftech. Despite their origins, the developers chose a Western setting for Tides of Annihilation to meet the expectations set by their financier, Tencent. "This game and Black Myth: Wukong are two projects backed by Tencent, with different targets. Black Myth: Wukong was aimed at the Chinese market, whereas Tides of Annihilation is designed for a Western audience, leading us to the Arthurian legends," explained the game's producer. The central theme revolves around knights, specifically King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.
The game unfolds in a modern-day London devastated by an Outworld invasion, leaving protagonist Gwendolyn as seemingly the last human survivor. While rooted in a contemporary setting, the game weaves in fantasy elements inspired by Arthurian myths.
Devil May Cry-Inspired Combat and Over 30 Bosses
Tides of Annihilation's combat system draws clear inspiration from the Devil May Cry series, a fact the developers openly acknowledge. "It's definitely more like Devil May Cry," they stated, emphasizing the game's accessible controls designed to appeal to a broader audience, including those less familiar with action games. Players can customize their combat style with four weapon options and over ten different Knights to command as sidekicks.
As Gwendolyn, players will discover their ability to summon the legendary Knights of the Round Table to aid in their journey through a ravaged London, confronting the Outworld invasion. The game promises over 30 bosses with unique abilities, ensuring challenging and engaging gameplay. "Players will have to prepare for very challenging boss fights," the developers added.
Future Plans: An Anthology in the Making
Eclipse Glow Games also expressed their vision for expanding Tides of Annihilation into an anthology series. They aim to explore different settings and mythologies, each potentially featuring a new protagonist. "But we would still want to use the Outworld invasion concept that we're using for Tides of Annihilation," they noted, hinting at the core theme that would unite the series. The success of the initial title is crucial for realizing this broader vision.
Currently in its beta phase, Tides of Annihilation is slated for a 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will follow Gwendolyn as she navigates the ruins of London and the intertwined fantasy realm of Avalon, battling fate and invaders alike.
