Star Wars Outlaws Gets More Bad Sales News

Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor

Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the franchise's first open-world title, is significantly underperforming, falling short of sales projections and even being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, according to recent reports.

Despite initially positive reviews upon its August 2024 release, player reception has been mixed, with criticism primarily focused on the game's combat and stealth mechanics. While Ubisoft addressed these concerns with post-launch updates, the changes proved insufficient to boost sales significantly. This underperformance led to a sharp drop in Ubisoft's stock price shortly after the game's launch, raising concerns about the company's financial health.

VGC and industry journalist Christopher Dring reported that Star Wars Outlaws' sales are not only disappointing but are being eclipsed by Jedi: Survivor. While precise figures remain undisclosed, Jedi: Survivor's success highlights several contributing factors. It's a sequel to a well-received title, launched to critical acclaim in April 2023, and further boosted by a later-released update expanding its availability to PS4 and Xbox One.

In contrast, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction, despite ongoing updates and DLC releases. The first DLC, "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card," introduced Lando Calrissian, and a second expansion, "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune," featuring Hondo Ohnaka, is slated for Spring 2025. However, these additions haven't been enough to reverse the game's poor performance. In Europe, it recently ranked only 47th in 2024's best-selling games.

The disparity in performance underscores the challenges of establishing a new open-world Star Wars game compared to the success of a well-established sequel within a proven formula. Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment remain hopeful that future DLC will revitalize Star Wars Outlaws' sales, but the current situation presents a significant setback.
