Splitgate, the “Halo-Meets-Portal” Shooter, Announces Sequel
1047 Games, the creators of the popular arena shooter, is thrilled to announce Splitgate 2, a sequel set to launch in 2025. This announcement follows the success of the original Splitgate, which captivated players worldwide with its unique blend of fast-paced arena combat and portal mechanics.
Splitgate 2: A New Era of Portal Combat
Evolution, Not Revolution
Revealed via a cinematic trailer on July 18th, Splitgate 2 promises a fresh take on the beloved formula. CEO Ian Proulx emphasized the studio's commitment to building a game with lasting appeal, stating their goal is to create "a game that can last a decade or more." This long-term vision drove the development of new tools designed to enhance gameplay depth and player satisfaction. Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, highlighted the refined portal mechanics, aiming to cater to both casual and expert players.
Built using Unreal Engine 5 and remaining free-to-play, Splitgate 2 will introduce a faction system, adding a new layer of strategic depth. While retaining core elements of the original, the sequel promises a significantly enhanced visual and gameplay experience. The game will be available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One in 2025.
The original Splitgate, often described as a fusion of Halo and Portal, quickly gained popularity after its demo release, attracting 600,000 downloads within a month. Its immense success led to server upgrades to handle the influx of players. Following an extended early access period, the original Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022, with the developers announcing a pause on updates to focus on creating a truly exceptional sequel.
New Factions, Maps, and More
The Splitgate 2 trailer showcases the Sol Splitgate League and introduces three distinct factions: Aeros (emphasizing speed and mobility), Meridian (focusing on tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (highlighting raw power). While details remain scarce, the developers confirmed that Splitgate 2 will not feature a hero shooter model.
While gameplay specifics are yet to be fully revealed (expect a deeper look at Gamescom 2024, August 21st-25th), the trailer offers a glimpse into the enhanced visuals, weaponry, and portal mechanics. The developers confirmed the authenticity of the maps, weapons, and effects shown in the trailer, including the return of dual-wielding.
Dive Deeper into the Lore
Splitgate 2 will not include a single-player campaign. However, a companion mobile app will offer an immersive experience for lore enthusiasts, providing access to comics, character cards, and a faction-matching quiz.
