Sony Updates PSN PC Policy, Unveils New Gifts
Sony's policy requiring PSN tethering for even single-player PC games has sparked considerable outrage among gamers. This restriction, coupled with the service's regional limitations, significantly impacts the accessibility and sales of modern Sony titles on PC.
However, Sony recently announced some policy adjustments. While the company hasn't completely abandoned PSN tethering for PC games, they've introduced several relaxations.
PSN tethering will be optional for the following titles:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Players who choose to tether their games to PSN will receive the following bonuses:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit line for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Black Bear armor set, the "Lost Things" chest at the game's start, and a resource pack.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points for unlocking features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In a November investor call, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the backlash against PSN connection requirements. He emphasized the importance of these requirements for security and order, referencing service-based games. However, he failed to adequately explain how mandating PSN accounts enhances security in single-player titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök.
Times have changed, and this policy shift reflects a response to player feedback, though the underlying rationale remains somewhat unclear.
