Updated ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release for PS5 and Xbox Series X

Recent updates to the ESRB ratings suggest a potential upcoming release of Doom 64 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made an official announcement, the updated ESRB listing strongly indicates a near-term launch.

The 1997 Nintendo 64 classic, Doom 64, received a remastered release for PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, featuring enhanced visuals and a new chapter. This enhanced version also launched on Steam. The new ESRB ratings, however, point to a next-gen port. Historically, ESRB ratings often precede official announcements by a few months, suggesting a relatively swift release timeframe.

The absence of a PC rating in this update is noteworthy. However, given the 2020 version's Steam release and the existence of Doom 64 mods for classic Doom titles on PC, a PC port remains a possibility. Bethesda's past practice of quietly releasing older Doom titles further fuels speculation of a surprise launch.

Looking beyond Doom 64, rumors suggest a potential January 2025 reveal for Doom: The Dark Ages, with a full release expected sometime that year. Re-releasing classic titles like Doom 64 could serve as effective pre-release marketing for the upcoming installment in the long-running franchise.
