PS5 Drives Return: Limited Availability Imminent
PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not for Long)
The PlayStation 5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including Amazon and PlayStation Direct, as of mid-January 2025. However, given recent trends, this stock is expected to sell out quickly.
The scarcity stems from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020, the first Sony console without a built-in disc drive, followed by the disc-less PS5 Pro in 2024. Both the PS5 Pro and the Slim models offer modularity, allowing users to purchase and install a disc drive separately. This has led to significant demand, particularly in the US, where the official Sony disc drive has been consistently hard to find.
While some retailers have restocked since the beginning of the year, the shortage persists. As of January 15th, Amazon US and PlayStation Direct are selling the drive for its MSRP of $79.99. A third-party seller on Walmart was also identified, but they are charging a 50% markup ($122) and have limited stock.
Where to Buy a PS5 Disc Drive Now:
Store | Price |
---|---|
Amazon | $79.99 |
PlayStation Direct | $79.99 |
Walmart (Reseller) | $122 |
PlayStation Direct Purchase Limits:
PlayStation Direct limits orders to one disc drive per customer, a common practice to deter scalpers.
The ongoing shortage, also affecting the UK since late 2024, is likely linked to the PS5 Pro's launch on November 7th. Unlike the standard PS5, the Pro model doesn't offer a disc drive option, forcing users who want physical media compatibility with the top-tier console to purchase the drive separately.
With the disc drive still unavailable at major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy, the shortage is far from over. The duration of the shortage remains uncertain.
