Mastering Path of Exile 2's Expedition Endgame: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a revamped endgame system from the original game. This guide details Expedition mechanics, rewards, and the passive skill tree.

Understanding Expeditions

Four major endgame events populate the PoE 2 Atlas: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. Expeditions, marked by a light blue spiral icon on the Atlas, offer unique gameplay and rewards. An Expedition Precursor Tablet placed in a completed Lost Tower slot guarantees an Expedition encounter on a map node.

Upon entering an Expedition map, locate the central Detonator and four NPCs. The core mechanic involves strategically placing Explosives near Markers to trigger events:

  • Red Markers: Detonating near these spawns Runic Monsters. Larger markers yield larger monster packs, enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: These relics provide beneficial or detrimental modifiers (e.g., increased elemental damage from monsters but higher item rarity from chests).
  • Black Markers (Spiral Symbol): Detonating near these spawns Excavated Chests containing Artifacts, Logbooks, currencies, and high-tier gear.

The Explosives UI shows the area of effect (AoE). Optimal farming involves spreading Explosives to maximize marker activation without overlapping AoE circles. After placing Explosives, interact with the Detonator to initiate the event. Death resets the map, but players can strategically retreat and return later.

Expedition Pinnacle Maps and Olroth

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. These are used with Dannig in your hideout to access Expedition Pinnacle Maps—significantly larger Expeditions with triple the Explosives. These maps feature Olroth, a powerful boss (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth awards 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, valuable currency, and exclusive unique items. The higher the map level, the greater the chance of Olroth appearing.

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

The Expedition Passive Skill Tree, accessible via the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu, offers modifiers to enhance Expedition rewards and difficulty. Points are primarily earned by defeating Olroth.

The tree features Notable nodes and difficulty-increasing nodes. Prioritize nodes like "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward boosts. Nodes like "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" offer further enhancements at increased difficulty. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to its significant reduction in Explosives.

Notable Expedition Passive Effect Requirements
Extreme Archaeology Reduces Explosives to 1, but boosts radius by 150%, placement range by 100%, and reduces enemy Life by 20% N/A
Disturbed Rest Maps contain 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks from Runic Monsters; Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts from Runic Monsters; Detonation chains travel 50% faster N/A
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters; 50% more Exotic Coinage from Runic Monsters Timed Detonations

Expedition Rewards

Artifacts are the primary currency. Four types exist (Broken Circle, Black Scythe, Order, Sun), each used with a specific vendor to purchase gear. Exotic Coinage refreshes vendor inventories.

Reward Use Gear
Broken Circle Artifact Gwennen (Weapons) Weapons
Black Scythe Artifact Tujen (Belts and Jewelry) Belts and Jewelry
Order Artifact Rog (Armor) Armor
Sun Artifact Dannig (Used to acquire other Artifacts) Used for other Artifacts
Exotic Coinage Refreshes any Expedition vendor inventory N/A

Expedition Logbooks, obtained from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, unlock Pinnacle Maps and the chance to encounter Olroth, leading to significant rewards and passive skill tree progression.
